Facts about Cheltenham
Cheltenham was founded as the site of a
monastery in the 9th century. The town grew
relatively slowly; in the 17th century the population
was in the region of 1,500.
In the late 18th century, Cheltenham became one of the most fashionable health resorts in the country due to the discovery of its natural spring waters. It still boasts many fine Regency town houses. The Promenade is considered to be one of the most beautiful thoroughfares in the country, with its tree lined avenue flanked by smart shops and cafés.
- Cheltenham is the host to National Hunt Racing. The first organised flat race meeting took place in 1815. Nowadays 230,000 watch the festival each year and £500 million is bet on the outcome of the races.
- In 1831 the first regular passenger service started using three steam powered coaches that travelled the nine miles between Cheltenham and Gloucester at an average speed of just 4 miles per hour.
- In 1838 Cheltenham saw the first successful parachute jump by an Englishman when John Hampton jumped out of a balloon several thousand feet above Montpellier Gardens
- Gustav Holst, composer of The Planets was born in Cheltenham in 1874 as was Arthur ‘Bomber’ Harris in 1892.
